O’Malley Financial Services, located in Omaha, provides expert assistance with taxes and financial planning. Owned and operated by two Marian alumnae, Bridget O’Malley Tynan (‘94) and Erin O’Malley Anderson (’88), this Omaha business is one of the busiest during the months of January to April.
Tax season runs from Jan. 1 to April 15, with April 15 being the deadline for submitting tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). While returns can be filed later, doing so after the deadline will result in additional fees. The two sisters help clients with various financial needs but are not currently accepting new clients. However, they plan to open their books to new clients after the 2025 Tax Season.
Tynan said that the best part of working with her sister is, “carrying on a family business and honoring what our dad started.”
“We share the same philosophy in educating individuals about their personal tax and financial situations,” Anderson said.
To add a personal touch, O’Malley Financial Services gives each client a gift based on whether they owe money or receive a refund from the IRS. If a client gets a refund, they receive a Crunch bar as a token of success, symbolizing that they’ve worked hard and are getting money back. If a client owes money, they get a PayDay bar, signifying the need to pay the government. They buy these in bulk at the beginning of the season so that they guarantee that all of their clients to have a candy bar when they walk out after their tax appointment.
“We try to lighten the mood when people have to pay. It’s not always easy to owe money,” Tynan said.
Staying organized is essential during tax season, so the sisters have their employees sign up for lunch shifts. Lunch shifts are when each of their 16 employees sign up for a day to bring lunch for the office. This allows everyone to stay focused on work without worrying about bringing lunch each day. Tynan’s favorite part of lunch planning is, “Seeing what others bring; it’s a fun treat.”
“Getting to try other meals that you wouldn’t normally make,” Anderson added as another benefit. Our employees are great cooks!”
O’Malley Financial Services operates Monday through Saturday, with hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The extended hours help them accommodate clients’ schedules.
“Customer service is key. We want to be available when people can come,” Tynan said.
“We want to serve as many clients as possible and recognize that they work during the day, so we are open evenings and weekends,” Anderson said.
Tynan and Anderson said that, “Tax season is fulfilling.”
The team celebrates the end of tax season each year on April 15 with dinner and massages. Tynan says, “We celebrate all the hard work we’ve done to get to this point.”
Tax season is undoubtedly busy, and it’s important to get taxes done on time. O’Malley Financial Services follows the motto, “We pay more than we cost,” as Tynan said, “We want people to know we’ll get them a deduction they may miss.”
Anderson added, “It is worth a few hundred bucks to save thousands in tax dollars. We understand tax law and how to maximize your situation.”
This is a prime example of how marian alumni are in the workforce now.
