It’s not every day that the Archbishop comes to Marian. On Oct. 14, Archbishop Michael McGovern paid a visit to Marian, celebrated Mass with the Marian student body, and shared a homily connecting to the Mass’ theme, Journey with Dignity.” He remarked on the importance of treating all people, including immigrants, with human dignity and respect.

After celebrating Mass, the FIAT Core team seniors, Clare Engel, Sophia Sparwasser, Eleanor Kolterman, Sienna Maiers and Maeve Wharton, led the Archbishop on a short tour, followed by lunch in the Marian room.

The students, in accompaniment with several administrators and teachers, discussed the future of the church with the Archbishop. He remarked on his desire to get to know the youth of the church. He seeks to encourage them in their “friendship[s] with Jesus,” as they will someday become the future leaders of the church.

The Archbishop plans to visit as many high schools in the Omaha Archdiocese as his schedule allows, hoping to connect with the young people in Omaha.

Archbishop McGovern was previously the pastor of the St. Mary Parish in Chicago before becoming the Bishop of the Diocese of Belleville in southern Illinois. On March 23, he received the call that he was to become the next Archbishop of Omaha. Notably, that date also marked exactly five years since he had received the call to become the Bishop of Belleville.

After relocating from Illinois, Archbishop McGovern’s busy schedule, from grade school visits to Masses, will most definitely orient him to his new surroundings.

The Archbishop has now visited Marian three times, once for the Archdiocesan Professional Development on the Science of Reading, another to help celebrate the Servant of Mary Jubilees and this Mass with the student body. He hopes to attend more even
