When people think of their go-to snack, sauerkraut usually isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, sauerkraut might just be last on their list. What many don’t realize is that sauerkraut is not only a delicious snack, but it’s also good for you.

There is a huge stigma around kraut—but why? It’s essentially just pickles in another form: as shredded cabbage and slightly more tangy. However, pickles seem to be a fan favorite among people of all ages. This could be because kraut is a popular German food, and lots of people are scared to try things outside of their comfort zone.

However, if everyone would just get past that initial fear of something new, they would find that kraut is a scrumptious snack with tons of health benefits. Sauerkraut is packed with billions of probiotics, making it a great way to support your gut health. It also has many beneficial vitamins and minerals, while also being low-calorie, making it a well-rounded snack.

There are many ways to enjoy kraut. My personal favorite is straight out of the jar as a midnight snack. There are plenty of other methods for those who aren’t as fond of it as I am, though. Typically, it is eaten with traditional German and Eastern European dishes, but it can also be added onto American hot dogs or brats. A classic way to eat kraut is on a Reuben sandwich with lots of corned beef and cheese to balance it out. Some people even add it onto their salads!

Now that you know a little more about sauerkraut, I highly encourage you to try it (or give it a second chance if you aren’t a fan). Not only is it a delicious snack, but it’s also a great source of probiotics, vitamin and minerals. Take that leap of faith and try some kraut—your body will thank you!
