Inspirational Commentary by J1 Reporter Amalea Poulos

As a three time nominee for the Academy Award for Best Director and a two time winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Alexander Payne is the epitome of inspiration.

Payne, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, has been known in my parea (a Greek word referring to a circle of friends that lasts through generations and contributes to the growth of the human spirit, AKA squad goals) for a countless amount of years. He is an alum of the Creighton Prep Class of ’79 and attended my church. Payne is very well known in any Greek community but holds a special place in the hearts of Greek-Omahans.

He first studied at Stanford University. He then received his MFA from UCLA Film School, and later went on to make a deal with Universal Pictures. His first big hits were “Election” (1999) and “About Schmidt” (2002). His films tend to revolve around dark humor as well as satire.

Payne’s films are quite honestly some of the most entertaining pieces I have ever seen. Full of comedy and realistic perceptions of society, these movies are classics that everyone should take the time to watch.

As a gal with a fascination towards successful Greek-American filmmakers who grew up in Omaha, it’s not hard to believe I’m enthralled with Alexander Payne. He exemplifies the values of Greek culture, such as working hard and family, through everyday life. One day, I hope to become as extraordinary of a person as he is.

Using a family friend’s connection, I was able to reach out to Payne via email. He agreed to an interview and I wait with bated breath for a response to my questions. There’s no doubt he’s busy, his new project is a film starring Reese Witherspoon and Matt Damon set to come out in 2017.  Although answers to my questions about leading a life of inspiration would be cool, I can’t say I’m disappointed. Payne’s dealing with matters bigger than a deadline for a high school journalism class. I’ll continue to wait for his response.

Alexander Payne, esai apistefto (you are incredible).
