Saying it and spelling it might be hard, but it is definitely a recognizable word. Gnimocemoh is “Homecoming” spelled backwards, and it is one of the many things that make Marian unique. Gnimocemoh Spirit Week started on Oct. 20 and ended with the dance on Oct. 23. Senior Class Officers came up with themes for each day during Spirit Week and also a theme for the Friday night dance.
Everything is backwards at Marian Homecoming, along with this year’s theme. Neewollah, Halloween backwards, was the theme this year.
“Neewollah was an easy choice. Since it is so close to Halloween, we thought it was the perfect fit,” senior Class Officer Jenna Taylor said. Girls were asked to dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes as they danced to the “spook-tacular” DJ Hotboy. The class officers created a haunted house vibe in the West Gym and Quad area with fake spider webs and lights.
Since there was no school on Monday, Tuesday’s theme of Animal Print kicked off the week. On Wednesday, the theme was Two Peas in a Pod (twin) day. With a partner, girls chose their favorite pair to dress up as. There was everything from Scooby Doo and Shaggy to the Weasley twins.
“My favorite pair was the Starbucks frappuccino and barista. They were so creative!” sophomore Sunday Geek said.
The annual staff versus student volleyball game was on Thursday, and girls wore jerseys with their skirts. The students defeated the teachers in an intense game. On Friday, Marian turned from an all-girl’s school to an all-dad’s school. The dad theme caused girls to dress in cargo shorts, polos, and visors.
This year, Gnimocemoh was a BOSS event. “It is unfortunate that it is a BOSS event, because not many juniors and senior will be able to go because the ACT is the next day and state Cross Country is that same day, but it is good that there is an incentive to go!” senior Class Officer Mary Kate Mulhall said. The “fang-tastic” night brought crazy costumes, laughs and a whole lot of dancing. “Gnimocemoh was really fun! It was so unique and I am so glad I chose Marian.”
