When junior Lily Foley tunes her radio to 102.7 FM Spirit Catholic Radio on Thursdays at 8 p.m., she sometimes hears her own voice. As a part of the station’s Witness: The Time for Action is Now! Program, Foley gathers with young adults from several different high schools and colleges, such as Mercy High School, Creighton Prep, and Duchesne Academy, to discuss important current topics. The Witness team meets weekly, and Foley participates when her schedule allows it.

“My volunteer time at Spirit Catholic Radio is focused on informing and
inspiring others, especially teens, in our community,” Foley said. Teams also meet in Council Bluffs and Lincoln, with several other teams forming elsewhere in Nebraska. The Witness team brainstorms for an hour before every broadcast and discusses a variety of topics, such as adjusting to high school, praying to the saints, and healthy relationships. This past year, Foley interviewed people all over the country of different faiths about any questions they had on Catholicism.

“The focus is not on our group’s needs, but rather on how we can serve others through our experiences and discoveries,” Foley said. Before every show, the volunteers call on the Holy Spirit to guide their conversation. About two hours of recording later, the tape is professionally cut by their adult moderator, Mrs. Paula Bastian, and broadcast to the Omaha community.

Group members open up about faith and morality and invite listeners to explore their own beliefs. Several people have shared with Foley how greatly the radio show has impacted them.

“…The radio show informs and inspires, but is amazing in that it focuses on faith and healthy rela- tionships. The teen group format is simply a strength, because the message comes from the listeners’ peers–not a lecture from parents or authority gures,” Foley said.

Foley’s work at Spirit Catholic Radio provides teenagers the opportunity to explore and discuss their faith openly. The teen volunteers make a di erence by creating open channels for communication and spreading their acceptance to everyone in the Omaha community.

The show airs on Thursdays from 8-9 p.m. with an encore on Saturdays at 7 p.m. Each broadcast is archived online at spiritcatholicradio.com.
