Over the summer, senior Ruthie Barrett discovered her love and talent for making ice cream. Being that it was tasty and pleasant for her friends at their summer job as a lifeguard to eat in the heat; she figured that she would try to make a profit from it. Shortly after her first sale, Barrett said, “My business just began to grow,” and as summer came to an end and Marian’s annual donation towards tuition assistance, known as the Walk-a-thon (WAT), began, her baking and business skills came in handy. Barrett made and donated a whopping $300 towards this year’s Walk-A-Thon. Barrett said, “I’m proud of the money I made and gave, and how people reacted to my ice cream”— to be expected. She says that if she had the opportunity to sell her delicious ice cream for four more years she would, because she said she believes that WAT is a great cause.

She not only enjoyed the outcome of selling her ice cream, but she truly loved the process of making it. She says that her favorite part of the process was assembling the ice cream into the pints and topping it off with her trademark sticker. Barrett said that cooking/baking is “a way for me to express myself.” Adding to that, she says that “Cooking has always been a creative outlet for me… and a way for me to destress.” She has a knack for executing many different recipes of foods, desserts, snacks, and more. Making ice cream for WAT was a way for Barrett to feed her passion and talent as an uprising chef.
