With the approaching Halloween season comes an inevitable influx of ideas on what to dress up as this year. People debate on whether they should keep the quintessential vampire vibe or go in a more niche direction, dressing up as characters like Lydia from Beetlejuice or Letty Ortiz from Fast and Furious. This is certainly the case for juniors Isabella Hayes and Cecilia Behounek, who are inspired by these characters. Hayes said she “really loves [Lydia’s] goth style” as someone who appreciates the goth look, and Behounek said she grew up around the Fast and Furious franchise and “always saw [Letty] as empowering.”

Other girls are finding costumes that incorporate an entire group, such as the childhood favorite Monster High dolls or, the universally popular, Gru and his minions. This year, sophomore Dorothy Smith wants to step outside the usual silly costumes that she and her friends dress up as, and she said that “we thought we could just dress up for ourselves in more cute Halloween costumes and just hangout for the night.” Freshman Jillian McKee chose the Despicable Me ensemble because “everyone can be included,” while adding that “running through the streets with a bunch of minions is just a sight to see.”
Duo costumes also remain popular among girls this year. Junior Lauren Hicks says that she chose the glamorous Barbie Princess and Popstar duo for her costume because it represents her and her friend very well, adding that she is a blonde who “likes a lot of pop music such as Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift,” while her best friend is a brunette who “likes purple and rock music.”
Sophomore Presley Vorland is taking the villain-princess route, dressing as Aurora and Maleficent with her friend. Vorland says, “We didn’t really want to put that much money into the costumes, so we went to Goodwill and found the perfect dresses…the idea just stuck.”
New trends always find a way to sneak into the Halloween season. When the bedazzled blonde rockstar Hannah Montana found her way onto the television screen in 2007, girls everywhere dressed up as her in hopes of pretending to live her double life. In 2021, Disney Plus revived the iconic role of Cruella De Vil with the movie Cruella, prompting people to dress head to toe in black and white fur. This year, leopard print has made its way back, reviving its role from the 2000’s. Freshman Keira Bavaresco says that she chose to follow the trend this year because she “has seen it all over TikTok.”
Marian girls never fail to embrace a sense of creativity and it most definitely shows in the way they are choosing to dress this Halloween. Despite some girls taking a more simple approach with their costumes this year, they always manage to add a unique element with an inspiring personal story or fangirling spirit. The costumes this year are sure going to be sweet, but look out; new ideas are always brewing.
