Enchanting the Stage: “Wicked” Soars Beyond Imagination

Review By J1 Reporter Molly Kinney

“Wicked” the movie is finally here, and from the minute you step into the theatre, you feel like you are in a magical land far away. If you have ever dreamed of flying monkeys, magic spells, and a green-skinned girl with a massive heart, then this is the perfect movie for you. The director is John M. Chu and it came out on Nov. 22. The movie is rated PG, so bring along family, friends and anyone in for a good time.

So, here’s the deal. “Wicked” is not just a story about the Wicked Witch of the West being evil and wishing on the downfall of everyone around her. It’s about a young woman named Elphaba and how she was completely misunderstood by everyone in Oz.

The way the movie shows her friendship with Glinda (the “Good Witch”) is extremely heartwarming. The two are so different but still become some of the closest friends. The best part about this movie was without a doubt the singing. The two women sing everything with powerful emotion that truly makes this movie great. I had chills when they sang Defying Gravity.” It’s such a powerful moment that shows the importance of growing and forming strong friendships with those around you.

The costumes and sets helped depict the unique personality of every character. One of the strongest messages I got from this movie was the importance of being different and following your path while forming friendships that provide a sense of comfort. By having each character in the movie have their own style, it is the perfect example of how uniqueness brings people to life and makes things happier.

The only thing I didn’t love was that some parts felt a little slow and the movie was a bit long. At around 2 hours and 40 minutes, this movie is definitely not for a toddler that is obsessed with Dorthy and the Wizard of Oz.

In the end, though, the movie totally nailed it. It’s about being yourself, even when the world doesn’t get you, and sticking by your friends no matter what. I walked out of the theater feeling like I could take on the world.

So, if you haven’t seen “Wicked” yet, buy those tickets. Trust me, it’s worth it. Five out of five stars from me because of the action packed plot and important message showcased in a colorful, emotional, and entertaining way.
