Review by J1 Reporter McKinley Fritz

Few people are chosen to be bridesmaids or groomsmen in a wedding. In a person’s life they may experience this role only once. How about 27 times? For the main character Jane in the 2008 film, “27 Dresses,” this is reality. After helping a bride in her childhood, Jane becomes fixated on helping brides in their weddings having been a bridesmaid 27 times along with practically running the weddings herself. Jane can’t help but romanticize weddings and wish for her own time to come.

This movie is the epitome of a lighthearted 2000s rom-com. With a unique plot line and love triangle, the movie provides comfort while delivering the theme of caring for yourself and finding your own happiness.

Oftentimes with rom-coms the miscommunication is painful to watch and while sometimes I was frustrated because characters just won’t talk to each other, the trope didn’t drag out too long. It drives the plot and creates just enough conflict between characters.

The overall message of the movie is another pro to this movie. The main character Jane learns when to put herself first and to let good things come into her life. This lesson is one many people need to hear. Sometimes it’s hard to take a step back and not help people but everyone has their needs and your own needs should be taken care of first so you can help others.

The characters did mend their relationships at the end a little too quickly for it to be realistic, but that truly is the magic of a rom-com. It’s a lighthearted version of reality and romanticizes life. If you are looking for a movie to become a classic for a rainy day and give you a smile on your face, “27 Dresses” is the way to go.

I would rate it an 8/10 because of the lovable characters and a love triangle to anticipate the result of, the movie is great fun to watch and an essential for cheesy rom-coms. If you love movies like “Mean Girls,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” or “13 Going On 30” then this movie is right up your alley.
