“Wicked” is an attention-capturing, song-filled, coming of age movie that will leave anyone wanting more. The movie that came out Nov. 22 follows the plot of the book closely, however, a few minor changes are made.
The beginning of the movie starts off with Ariana Grande in the opening musical scene. Grande portrays her character Glinda well showing the audience how she is perceived as the “good” witch. Her beautiful singing starts the film off nicely and sets the scene for the rest to come. Cynthia Erivo also contributes to the moods with her powerful singing bringing out her own character of Elphaba. The two form an interesting, but beautiful all the same, friendship that blooms throughout the film.
Their school adventures and friendship growth are inspiring to viewers of any age. The side characters were also impactful in their own ways and helped shed light on how differently Elphaba and Glinda were treated. Their time in Oz helps to demonstrate the hard choices we face, especially the “right” and “wrong” ones. This movie does a great job of showing that some people truly are misunderstood and that there are multiple sides to every story.
The set and costumes are extremely impressive and filled with bright and fun colors. The songs and choreography were immaculate and completely in sync. The audience could feel the energy and the passion from the cast. The film songs stayed in line nicely with the Broadway production songs.
“Wicked” is a film with many important and relatable themes that could serve well for anyone. Marcus theaters in Aksarben provided a nice space to watch the movie. “Wicked” is a movie that everyone needs to watch. Hopefully the sequel will be just as good!
