In the 18th century, African Americans suffered many setbacks in life. Because of this, the United States created Black History Month in February 1976 to honor and recognize such struggles within the community. This month, African Americans are celebrated for their upbringing, excellence, freedom and beautiful shades of Black. This is a time to take pride in being African American and to wear skin color as a symbol of honor.

Black History Month is celebrated with specific themes each February to applaud every perspective, person and history that revolves around the African American community. According to ASALH: The Founders of Black History Month, the themes started in 1928 and have continued since the current year. Last year it was African Americans and the Arts, and this year it is African Americans and Labor. According to the History Channel, editors said African Americans and labor focused on “work and working of all kinds—free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary—intersect with the collective experiences of Black people.”

“I believe Black History Month is important because it’s celebrating the greatness that is Black history,” said junior Kennedy Grace. “Black History Month shows what Black people have done for our country, and it also provides Black people with pride in who they are.”
Senior Dominika Kouassi said, “When I think of Black history, I don’t think of slavery, even though that is what’s primarily taught in schools. Yes, slavery was a gigantic part of Black history, especially in America, but it wasn’t Black people’s choice; it was by force. When I think of Black history and what should be celebrated, I think of all the work that Black people have done to move past slavery and rise against the social injustices that were spewed upon them since the abolition of slavery [should be celebrated].”

Black History Month is one of the most beautiful months to celebrate, especially for the Black community. It’s a time to acknowledge the tough past and present day and experience the culture and background of being Black. It’s a showcase of every detail and knowledge of a beautiful heritage that goes back decades.
