The weather changes from a crisp and frigid winter to the sun hanging high above, casting a golden glow on the skin of those below.

The sun is more than just a pleasant sensation- it’s an annual ritual, radiating the sun kissed glow that will signal the perfect tan.

The draw of a sun-kissed glow is undeniable. Whether it’s a way to enhance appearance, boost confidence, or blend in with prevailing beauty standards, tanning continues to be a embraced practice.

Sophomore Jo McAlpine’s introduction to tanning came from golf. Spending hours under the sun led to noticeable tan lines, which prompted her to even out her tan lines through more tanning.

For McAlpine, the effect of a tan is more than just surface level. “I feel so much better, prettier, my skin looks better, and I feel more confident,” McAlpine said. This sense of confidence is a major factor in her continued love for tanning.

Tanning is about both enhancing her appearance and improving how she feels, “Not only are you gonna have a really good tan, but you’re also gonna feel better because your confidence will be boosted,” McAlpine said.

The pressure to tan is also tied to beauty trends and social media. “There are beauty standards on social media, everyone highlights having a tan and everyone is always talking about how much better they feel when they are tan,” McAlpine said.

The idea that tanned skin is more attractive is a belief enhanced by influencers and celebrities online, making tanning something sought after by many.

McAlpine has faced both praise and concern regarding her tanning habits. “I get criticism when people say I tan too much, telling me ‘you’re gonna get skin cancer,’ but I also get compliments on my tan,” McApline said.

Aware of the health risks associated with prolonged sun exposure, McAlpine takes precautions to avoid sun damage. “I use sunscreen when tanning, healthy amounts so I am still protecting my skin but getting a good tan,” McAlpine said.

McAlpine uses sunscreen with an SPF of 35, applying it about two to three times when she is out in the sun tanning.

Though she enjoys a natural tan, she is mindful of excessive exposure and opts to balance tanning with skincare.

The attraction to tanning is a mix of beauty ideals, confidence boosts and social influences.

While the glow of tanned and sun kissed skin remains a coveted look everyone can experience, balancing the desire for bronzed skin with health-consciousness is key.
