In an increasingly modern world where fashion trends come and go in the blink of an eye, the pressure to wear what’s “in style” is real. Nevertheless, many find passion in expressing themselves through vintage fashion, embracing styles from decades gone by.

Vintage fashion, generally defined as clothing more than 20 years old, appeals to people for a variety of reasons. One prominent factor is nostalgia.

Counselor Mrs. Anna Sparwasser, who grew up in the 1980s, vividly remembers the iconic and bold styles that defined the era.

“I loved the ‘80s fashion. It was fun and you could kind of just wear whatever you wanted,” Sparwasser said. Additionally, she has noticed some ‘80s trends resurfacing today, reminiscing on the popularity of workout videos and athleisure and observing how “now people wear workout gear out like they did back then.”

Fashion is also said to be a cycle; a fair amount of current trends draw inspiration from styles of old.

Jeans are a common example of how clothes rotate in popularity over the years. As of late, 2000s-style low-rise jeans and 1970s-style flared jeans are having a comeback. When it comes to a trend she would not like to see again, Sparwasser said that “skinny jeans don’t need to come back.”

Consequently, the curation and sale of vintage clothing items has emerged as a profitable industry as classic couture increases in popularity.

Shops that specialize in antique fashion can be found here in Omaha. Great Plains Vintage and Flying Worm Vintage, both located in the Old Market, are two local businesses that thrive on the sale of quaint findings. Weird Wild Stuff, which closed in the summer of 2024 as the owner’s personal decision, also offered a broad selection of retro and retro-inspired garments.

With the modern popularity of online shopping, e-commerce sites including Depop, Poshmark, and eBay are also commonly used for the buying and selling of unique and hard-to-find vintage pieces.

The consumption of “old” clothing is not just for fun; it’s also environmentally friendly. Purchasing second-hand apparel serves as a sustainable alternative to fast fashion and reduces material waste. It also preserves pieces of history.

Vintage fashion offers a testament to the power of individuality as well as sustainability. Whether considered en vogue or not, antique dress offers a stylish way to express oneself and connect with the past.
