Babysitting is viewed as either a chore or a joy. It can be a fun, entertaining way to pass time, or it can feel like an obligation.
Sophomore Charlotte Gautschi has been babysitting since she was 10. Although Gautschi enjoys babysitting, to her it is a side hustle.
Since she views babysitting as a side hustle and plans to become employed at a workplace, she charges under minimum wage. To her, the ideal payment would be $13 an hour. However, this is depending on the ages and number of children.
Due to Guatschi not having a part time job, she tends to watch her spending. So she usually saves more than half of what she earns at a babysitting gig.
As babysitters engage in playful activities, from building a fort to jumping on a trampoline, you are reminded of the simple joys of being young.
Babysitting can have this effect on you as you see the world through a child’s eye, watching them take on life, “ I enjoy feeling like a little kid again,” Gautschi said.
As years have gone by, babysitting has changed. It has evolved from advances in modern technology, but additionally a more involved parenting style.
The responsibilities of a babysitter have increased, instead of just looking after the child, you are expected to help with school work, dietary routines, and even pets. There is also an increased number of nanny cams in homes to check on their children and the babysitter.

Although many things have changed, the activities that you can do with a child have pretty much stayed the same. “I like to do crafts, go outside, play board games, and bake with the kids,” Gautschi said. These are interactive tasks that kids can do with their babysitters.
Babysitting is a rewarding and important experience that requires patience, trust and attentiveness.
It provides opportunities to learn new skills and lessons for the life ahead of you. With the right approach, babysitting can be a fulfilling experience for both the child and the caretaker.
