The most recent season of ‘Squid Game’ released on Dec. 26, helps enforce the idea that the show’s debut still holds cultural and emotional relevance. However, while the second season was undoubtedly solid and gripping overall, it didn’t quite match the explosive impact of the first installment.

One of the season’s greatest strengths is its ability to dive deeper into its characters and their backstories. This time around, we learn more about the lives of some of the participants, which makes their struggles in the games more heart-wrenching. The production values are as impressive as ever, with creative sets and twisted, high-stakes games that reflect the show’s iconic mix of beauty and brutality.

That said, the pacing at the start of the season felt sluggish. The first few episodes spent a lot of time setting up the new dynamics and rules, which was necessary but less engaging compared to the fast-paced shock of the original. While the tension picked up in the second half, the slower beginning made it harder to become fully invested early on.

Another noticeable difference is that the element of surprise isn’t as strong this season. In the first season, no one knew what to expect, and the twists hit like a freight train. This time, the audience is more prepared for the betrayal, manipulation and the gory spectacle, which slightly lessens the impact. The show still delivers plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but they don’t quite reach the groundbreaking intensity of the first round.

Despite these minor critiques, this season leaves plenty of room for excitement about what’s to come. The finale ends on a note that promises even higher stakes and more intense drama in the next and final installment. I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds and what new twists the creators have in store for us.

Ultimately, this season of ‘Squid Game’ is a must-watch for fans of the series. It delivers on its promise of high-stakes drama and emotional storytelling, even if it doesn’t have the same revolutionary feel as its first season. If you can push through the slower start, you’ll find a thrilling and satisfying continuation of this modern classic. Be on the look out for season 3 on June 27, streaming on Netflix.
