Let’s get a little bit rowdy, R-O-W-D-Y, anybody there?” Crickets. The Crusader student section has turned into a one man band with the mascot yelling at empty bleachers and a fleeting parent section.
On Friday nights at Marian, the spectator environment is pretty blue, east gym bleachers are deserted and soccer field stands are left desolate. In contrast, a Friday night at Prep, bleachers are blue, bodies are blue, ticket booths are green, and pockets are empty.
How come Marian student sections are in a drought while every Creighton Prep student section seems quite plentiful, even overcrowded? The “Let’s get a little bit rowdy” cheer is quite ironic because there is no student section to even get rowdy.
The Crusader Castle still stands after 70 years. Undefeated since 1955. The crowd goes wild every game, shows up for every event, ears are ringing, and patrons are overwhelmingly doused in blue. That’s what a mascot dreams about every night before she wakes up to a Crusader crisis. Marian sports are highly decorated with state titles, medals, and massive award cases, but not a student section to show for it.

It is important to show up for sports not only because it is a good look but also because student athletes who devote all their time to their education and their sport have barely any support from the girls they see every day. The girls on the court, on the field, on the dirt, and on the track lack student section spirit. Most athletes would say they perform much better when there is a crowd to hype them up.
In order to keep Marian’s rank, status, and reputation Crusaders must continue to show up for their classmates and friends. Marian may not have a birdcage or a football team or a booster club overflowing with cash, but we do have the Crusader Castle.
The booster club blues are no joke. Could it be the difference in number of spectators between men’s and women’s sports (which is totally messed up) or could it be the lack of funding, lack of years in business, or even the lack of sports?
We’re Class A but other schools would grade us an F in school spirit.
