Look ma, just hands: Abi Knapton prepares for a dive during Nationals
Abi Knapton prepares for a dive during Nationals

For senior Abi Knapton, her undeniable talent for diving did not become obvious until freshman year.  Knapton had been an advanced gymnast since she was young, dedicated day in and day out to her sport.  Knapton was very successful over the course of her gymnastics career, and won countless awards. When she decided to quit the sport, she was recognized for having potential to be an outstanding diver. With a strong gymnastics background boosting her skills, Knapton quickly unveiled a natural talent for diving.

She has only been diving since freshman year, but she has been incredibly successful in that short amount of time. She has competed in many meets, taking home the gold time and time again.

Her impressive skills allowed her to compete in the 2015 USA Diving AT&T National Diving Championships in Orlando, Florida this past summer.

“I actually slipped on platform in semifinals and got 16th. I placed 21st on 1M in semis, and then in the 3M pre-lims, I was too close to the board on one of my dives, so I was scored low and ended up in 14th. Even with everything that happened, it was a good experience, and I’m happy with how I did, ” Knapton said.

There were over 700 divers at Nationals, but Knapton still held her own.

“I learned so much from the experience, and I’ll definitely be more prepared next year. I’m just proud of how far I’ve come the past four years,” Knapton said.

Her undeniable talent did not go unnoticed. Knapton has been recruited by University of Nebraska-Lincoln to join their diving team. This future Husker is sure to make a splash.
