Tragedy strikes when two explosions rock the Boston Marathon in Mark Wahlberg’s latest film, “Patriots Day.”

Wahlberg, who plays Sergeant Tommy Saunders, works with the Boston police force and eventually the FBI to catch the bombers.

The film was quick; there was never a dull moment. Slower parts of the film were filled with suspense and emotion. I particularly liked how the filmmakers included different angles and types of video (iPhone) when the bombs were going off.

Wahlberg’s performance was convincing and impressive – I got something from him I wasn’t expecting. The movie has a star-studded cast including J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman. The entire ensemble works together to create a strong sense of heroism in the 133 minute run time.

The action is heartbreaking and thrilling at the same time. In addition to the obvious bombs, the chase to catch the terrorists is exciting.

The extensive research is crystal clear and definitely appreciated. Wahlberg’s fictitious character glamorizes the events that happened in Boston in the sense that there was one hero that saved the day but is necessary to make the film enjoyable to audiences.
