On Nov. 23, the Servants of Mary along with close friends and family gathered at the convent to celebrate Thanksgiving. Every year, the sisters enjoy a Mass and Thanksgiving meal together to reflect and pray about all of the blessings in their lives. This year, the sisters had more than 80 guests at their celebration. Most of those guests are family and friends of the sisters who live in the Omaha area however Sr. Jackie Thorn OSM said, “Sr. Iris’ brother and sister-in-law came in all the way from Detroit.”
Prior to the Mass at 11 a.m., the sisters read George Washington’s “National Thanksgiving Proclamation” to remember the foundation of the holiday and why they should feel so blessed for all that they have. The Mass following, is a chance for the sisters to share their gratitude for God and each other through the reverence of prayer.
After Mass, the sisters and their guests enjoyed a delicious thanksgiving meal prepared by the food service that usually provides their food at the convent. Sisters who have houses in the Omaha area also brought desserts for everyone to share. A crowd favorite was Sister Jackie’s minced meat pie, “It was almost gone before the dinner even started!” Thorn said. Another dish that the sisters swoon for is classic thanksgiving turkey, however, their all time favorite is ice cream, sweet and simple!
After dinner, the sisters all helped clean up the mighty feast and watched some football while snacking on leftover turkey sandwiches, of course. This gathering annually brings lots of love, laughter and great food; this year certainly did not disappoint.
