Through my 18 years of living, I have watched a lot of movies. At an early age, kids are plopped in front of the television for some quick and painless relief for busy parents. We would watch movies like Disney’s “Cars” or any princess movies for a laugh and hopefully a valuable life lesson. As I’ve grown older, I started collecting a list of movies, brought to my attention by my older brother, that are guaranteed to make me laugh at almost every scene. Sadly, these movies are considered pretty underground to my generation and definitely need more recognition.
The first movie, one of my new favorites, is called “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” This movie received an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, is rated PG-13 and can be found on Netflix. This totally out of the box and bizarre cult classic has comedy, romance and action all tied into one movie. The first time I watched this movie, I was completely taken aback by the style of the comedy and action. The humor in “Scott Pilgrim” is witty, quick and sure to make you laugh by just watching the characters’ movements. However, the action is more comedic than realistic. With graphic novel-like fight scenes that inch towards the line of Anime style fighting, the plot of this edgy movie is definitely out of the ordinary. The main character, Scott Pilgrim, played by the loveable Michael Cera, is a bass guitarist in a garage rock band and a barely functioning adult. Scott Pilgrim is socially awkward and usually has trouble getting a girlfriend, but his whole life changes when he meets the bold roller skater Ramona Flowers. Scott’s life mission becomes defeating her deadly seven exes, in sword fights, epic band battles, and martial arts to win the love of his life. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is messy, random and the best type of movie to get out of your comfort zone to watch for a quick laugh.
Another guaranteed laugh suggestion I have, “Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” is a classic. This amusing movie stars the famous comedic duo Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Main character Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) grows up “wanting to go fast” or racing cars. His dreams come true when he becomes the #1 race car driver in the United States, has millions, a wife and kids and has no worries besides winning. His life comes crumbling down when another race car driver from France comes and takes his throne. This movie is a typical Will Ferrell comedy with hilarious one liners, random twists and famous catchphrases. “Talladega Nights” has a PG-13 rating, 71% Rotten Tomatoes and can be found on Hulu
