Sports Commentary By LuciaAmbrose

Taylor Swift’s frequent appearances at the Kansas City Chiefs football games, supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce, have made the football field an unexpected crossover of pop culture and sports. Commentators and fans have taken notice of her on-screen presence.

For years, the NFL has struggled to catch a younger, more diverse crowd. In a matter of weeks, Taylor Swift’s appearances have done what years of marketing campaigns could not: she made the NFL cool to an entirely new demographic of people.

In stadiums across the country, groups of Swifties (Swift supporters) showed up to cheer, wearing glittery red outfits and hand-made signs that blended song references with football cheers.

The reaction to Swift getting so much press from the NFL has been very divided. Of course, the Swifties were thrilled to see updates on Swift’s love life.

But for many men who consider football a sacred American tradition, the NFL’s embrace of Swift feels like an intrusion of pop culture into an arena that has strictly always been about athleticism and team rivalries.

The NFL, known for its masculine image, has now found itself crossing over with celebrity gossip and music fandoms.

Most NFL fans do not have the luxury of being season ticket holders for the team they support. Most Chiefs fans watch on television. The biggest complaint from Chiefs fans has been that now watching the games feels like a soap opera, and I am getting updates on Swift’s reactions to every play instead of getting information and updates on the actual game.

Some fans have less of a reaction. Math teacher Mr. Eric Thompson, a lifelong Chiefs fan, said, “I do not care who they show as long as the Chiefs are on TV. All I really care about is the game.”

Thompson’s senior daughter, Aubrey, who has also grown up as a Chiefs fan, said, “I also do not really care. I mean I am not a Swiftie but I sort of feel bad for her. It is like she is being watched under a microscope. But overall, I really just do not care.”

“I think it has been great this year,” senior Anne Stessman said. “As a Swiftie, I might be a little biased, but I don’t mind it. It’s been toned down from last year and she is truly there to support Kelce. Fans should realize she can’t control when they show her and just be happy she’s a supporter.”

Dean of Discipline, Mrs. Kris Hennings who also has supported the Chiefs for a long time, “hates when people say she’s a distraction because she has made so many people watch football and has helped the sport grow. A bunch of women are now talking football that did not know anything about the sport.”

Whether or not you are a Swiftie, it is undeniable the positive impact she has had on the NFL. The games that feature her have seen a significant boost in viewership. The fans who tune in to see her cheer for Kelce have driven up ratings for networks and advertisers.

The Chiefs-Jets game on Oct. 1, 2023, had more than 27 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched Sunday Night Football games, according to Forbes. That was the game after Swift first made her appearance as a Chiefs fan.

After Kelce and Swift hard-launched their relationship, his jersey sales reported a 400% increase in the days following Swift’s first public appearance at the Chiefs game, according to ESPN.

The NFL’s social media platforms have also seen record-breaking engagement levels, with posts and tweets related to Swift that have generated millions of views, likes and comments. The increased online buzz has made the NFL more relevant to all types of people, making it more visible beyond just sports media.

Swift’s presence at Kansas City Chiefs games has sparked a cultural crossover that has had undeniable benefits for the NFL, including increased viewership, heightened social media engagement and a new wave of interest from fans who might never have tuned in before. While some traditionalists feel that the focus on celebrity takes away from the sport itself, others appreciate the broader attention and growth Swift has brought to the league. Ultimately, whether viewed as a distraction or a positive influence, Swift’s impact has redefined the narrative around football fandom and opened up conversations about how the sport can evolve and appeal to a more diverse audience.
