“Free Solo” is an exciting documentary about the journey of a rock climber named Alex Honnold. He specializes in the rock climbing known as “free solo.” This type of climbing is when one climbs with no rope and no equipment solely relying on the climber’s skill and ability to avoid falling. This type of climbing is extremely dangerous and Honnold embarked on many climbs however, “Free Solo” is dedicated to his most celebrated climb of El-Capitan known to be one of the most challenging climbs in the world at 3,000 ft.

This documentary, directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin is rated pg-13 most likely because of the actions taking place. “Free Solo” can be streamed on platforms including Hulu, Amazon Prime video, Google Play movie, Fandango at home, Disney+, YouTube and Apple TV. 

This documentary was decorated in awards back in 2019 because of the appreciation people have acquired because of Honnold accomplishments. “Free Solo” received an Academy Award for best documentary, Primetime Creative Arts Emmy award for outstanding creative achievement in interactive media within an unscripted program, a BAFTA award for best documentary, and many other primetime awards.

“Free Solo” is a testament to human capability because of Honnold’s athletic achievement. His climb up the granite walls known to be the most challenging in the world opened many people’s eyes to the achievement he did. Honnold does this without a rope. One wrong step could cause him to fall to his death. This documentary captures his awe-inspiring human achievements while showcasing the scenery, motivation and psychological depth behind it.
