Bowling season has begun!

Nov. 18 and 19 marked the start of the Marian bowling season with tryouts.

Who makes the team comes down to the pin total of the two tryout days. Coach Chris Dziadus explains that “after two days of tryouts, we add up the pin totals of each person and then take the top 12. Those 12 end up being our team for the season.”

“Our goal for this season is to win our district and hopefully take the whole team to state. But first, we need to figure out the teams,” Dziadus said.

12 bowlers made the final cut.

The team coached by Dziadus consists of 5 seniors, 3 sophomores and 4 freshmen with sophomore Dottie Smith as team manager.

Senior Margaret Hiatt has been a member of the Bowling team since freshman year and is most looking forward to “spending time and laughing with the team. Also, getting to have our own banners in the gym and having senior night is really exciting.”

“Bowling has helped me make friends across all grades. I have really gotten to know every girl on the team. The community part of it is really important to me,” Hiatt said.

Sophomore Maelee Smith says that some of her favorite memories of bowling were “the times the guy at the snack bar would give us free icies during practice.”

This year is Smith’s second season with the team. Smith aims to hone in on her skills. “I want to beat my high score this season. It’s almost like I am competing against myself,” Smith said.

The team suffered a loss to Westside on Dec. 5 but set the record for the highest team score in Marian history. They will be back in action on Dec. 10 at Mockingbird Lanes against Burke High School. They will also play Dec. 12 at Maplewood Lanes against Millard South.
