At a time where fast food fuels the world, it is extremely important to remember that where you spend your money matters. While grabbing a drink from Starbucks supports a billionaire-owned corporation, choosing a local business like The Boba Bar ensures that your dollars go toward a family-run shop that truly values its customers.

For Marian junior Madeline Bergmann, The Boba Bar (on 2835 S 170th Plaza #204) is more than just a job. She has worked there for three years before taking over as a manager. “I’ve been so dedicated to the business since we first opened,” Bergmann said. Her family recently came into ownership of The Boba Bar, which she runs every day with a passion. “I really love the culture and the people that come in every week,” Bergmann said.  

Though she loves her work, balancing school and business ownership is no easy task. “I’m literally there seven days a week, right after school, and I go home, I do my homework and I do business stuff, so I really don’t get a break,” Bergmann said. While at school Bergmann’s dad, grandmother, and more family keep the store running. On the weekends and after school she takes over the Boba Bar. Even off of work Bergmann and her dad are balancing the books, thinking of new products, and finding ways to bring more people in. 

Despite the long hours, she understands the importance of moderation. 

“Don’t stress yourself out, like, take a break when you need to” she advised. “I definitely push my limits sometimes, but I understand that I need to give myself time and I need to give myself grace.” 

Looking ahead, Bergmann hopes to expand The Boba Bar while also pursuing a career in medicine. “I don’t necessarily want to have it forever, but I want it to get it to a stable place so that I could trust anyone that comes in, or that comes into management, that they would carry on the legacy of not only my previous boss, but also me”
