Review By J1 Reporter Reilly O’Brien

Last week my friends and I went into TCBY, a popular frozen yogurt shop located at 14615 W Maple Rd. It is located in a small strip mall, next to a Chipotle, and the new Korean style restaurant, Mochinut. TCBY is surprisingly expensive, for a small cup of ice cream, which is usually two scoops, you can pay up to $6.

The interior was not the most welcoming, it felt like walking into the set of a Disney Channel TV show from 2015. The colorful chairs pop out against the silver tables and white walls. This would be far more inviting if the floors were not covered in scuffs and the walls didn’t have stains on them. The floor is foundational, the tiles had been ripped up and never replaced. There are some cool elements, like the vintage ice cream coolers in the entrance, which would be made cooler if they actually had things in them.

The actual ice cream was pretty good. I got the salted caramel truffle, which was honestly amazing. One of my friends got the strawberry cream flavor, which was also great. With only 23 flavors to choose from, there isn’t much wiggle room for the kinds of inventive flavors you might find at eCreamery, but it was good. The psychedelic sorbet seemed interesting, and the rainbow cream is worth a try.

There was a wide range of available toppings. I ordered crushed up Reeses cups on mine, and they were great. There is also an option to get hot fudge or caramel, which is not often seen at places like TCBY. The worker serving us advised us not to try any of the fruit available, she said that it was not as fresh as it seemed. Other than the fruit though, many toppings were very good and fresh.

The service we received was great. The girl who scooped our ice cream was very personable and focused. There are two ways to order from TCBY, at the counter, or through the drive-thru. The worst part about how visit was when one frozen yogurt machine started screeching. This happens when the machine freezes itself, which is a little concerning.

TCBY offers a moderate but enjoyable range of ice cream flavors, along with several unique toppings. Something I would be interested in trying is a malt or shake. There are a few shortcomings, which come in the form of the price, cleanliness and overall aesthetic.

TCBY is always a fun place to go for frozen yogurt after having lunch at Chipotle, or seen a movie at the nearby Marcus Theaters. I would recommend sticking to the hand scooped flavors, and staying away from toppings that can expire.
