The tragedy of 9/11 continues to affect people today and as the 25 year anniversary recently passed many were reminded of the dark day. Within the Marian community teachers and staff recall what that Sept. 11 felt like and how it forever changed, influenced, and impacted our nation and its people. 

One of these staff members recalls the event vividly and explained in an interview the impact it had on her and the nation at the time. Mrs. Rachel Tomlinson was working in Cleveland, Ohio in a small company office at the time and remembers being huddled with colleagues as they watched the news on a small box television that sat in the corner. Tomlinson says her initial reaction was shock because “Nothing like that had happened before.” She recalls feeling frightened and unsure of what was to come. 9/11 has changed the nation’s policies and tightened its security measures. This is evident as you walk into the airport where you are met with strict protocols and heavy security. Tomlinson says that after the attacks she felt scared and anxious when getting on flights and still feels a slight anxiety today.

“Nothing like that had happened before.”

Tomlinson felt moved to meet others with compassion and understanding after the event as it greatly impacted those around her. Her message to the younger generation is to share in humanity and unite as a community. Although Marian students were not yet alive, the Marian community can still reflect and respect the perseverance and bravery of those who fought and pray for those lives that were lost.
