Retreats at Marian have always been a big deal. Marian girls go all out with everything they do, especially when it comes to Freshman Retreat. Freshman Retreat is an overnight event that encourages unity within the freshman class.
Many people work behind the scenes to help plan the mega event which is Freshman Retreat. One of these hard-working people is Deacon Kevin Fuller. Fuller is a theology teacher, Campus Minister, a deacon at Saint Leo’s and Marian, and a retreat coordinator.
Fuller works tirelessly with many other people to ensure the smooth running of Freshman Retreat. Fuller said that he “greatly appreciates the help of Mr. Greg Golka, Mrs. Anna Kolterman, Ms. Sara Greisch, Sr. Jackie Thorn, the counselor department, and the overnight nurse who worked behind the scenes to make sure Freshmen Retreat was a big success.”
Deacon Fuller doesn’t just work behind the scenes. He is also an adult leader. He works closely with Kolterman, Greisch and Sr. Jackie during the retreat. He is the deacon for the evening Mass, which helps expose Marian girls to the faith community that is present within the school. As a deacon, Fuller preaches the word of God and serves others both during and outside of Mass. He also performs sacraments such as Baptism, Marriage, and Funerals.
A lot of planning goes into this retreat. Planning begins in May of the prior year. Incoming juniors and seniors apply for the position of retreat leader during the prior spring. Incoming sophomores have the opportunity to participate in Retreat as Shadow Crew members. Students who participate in Freshman Retreat must fill out an application which is evaluated by Campus Ministry leaders and members of Marian faculty.
“Freshman Retreat is important because it helps the freshmen connect with their class,” Fuller said. Retreats help Marian girls become united with their classmates and help the girls see that faith is important here at Marian. Faith at Marian is evident through our monthly Masses, daily prayers and the continued connection of the Servants of Mary.
Marian retreats create a bond between classmates that helps strengthen class spirit. These retreats would not be possible without the work of many people, especially Deacon Fuller. He will continue to serve as a role model through all the work he does for the Marian and broader Catholic community.
