As temperatures decrease this holiday season, anxiety levels increase for more than half of the United States population and the 2,246 individuals in Nebraska alone who are homeless. These individuals are largely put at risk as they lack the resources necessary to brave the cold.
The National Alliance to End Homelessness says that more people than ever are experiencing homelessness for the first time. From 2019 to 2023, the number of people who entered emergency shelters increased by more than 23%. The Marian community finds ways to combat these issues by giving back this winter season. Freshman Elza Brugman, sophomore Leah Wisdom and junior Casteria Agbeletey all choose to volunteer at Open Door Mission where they thrive in creating a positive impact.
The Open Door Mission is a popular volunteering spot in Nebraska that works
to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. It offers 916 beds, serves more than 4,747 meals per year and provides many resources to more than 1,000 people living in poverty. Brugman shares that “a good way to give back is by donating things like food and blankets to places like Open Door Mission who will organize baskets to those who won’t go into shelters.” Brugman has been donating and helping at Open Door Mission since she was 8 years old. Wisdom helps to give back by serving food, water and hot chocolate all while having conversations with the people there. The real reason she volunteers is to “see faces light up when they talk about the hope they have for the future.”
Agbeletey went to the Open Door Mission with her church and helped serve
food. She reflected on the overall experience, saying, “It made me thankful for all that I have and take for granted at times.” Agbeletey says she chooses to volunteer because “it is her responsibility,” emphasizing that she is fortunate to be in a position where she can aid others. If you are looking to give back this winter season, some other Nebraska organizations that help to combat the worldwide issue of homelessness are Siena Francis House, MICAH House, and Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County. All three of these organizations work to provide shelter to those who lack it.
The winter is especially difficult for homeless communities and it is important
to extend a helping hand. It is never too late to give back to those in need, and the volunteer opportunities are truly endless.
