In a world where people form deep connections with their belongings, cars often become more than just vehicles, they become companions. For junior Sophia Losole, naming her car was a natural step in personalizing her driving experience. Her 2023 Ford Bronco, a navy blue powerhouse, carries the charming name Little Miss Midnight, inspired by none other than Taylor Swift.
“I love Taylor Swift and the color blue,” Losole said, emphasizing how the name reflects both her taste and the car’s sleek, dark color. But beyond aesthetics, naming her car has changed the way she perceives it. “I feel more clean and protective of it since it’s mine,” she said, reinforcing the idea that naming a vehicle can foster a sense of responsibility.
The practice of naming vehicles isn’t new, and Losole said she believes certain types of cars naturally invite specific kinds of names. “Trucks get big names, Cybertrucks are ugly, and family cars get cute family names. Old cars may even get an older name to fit their aesthetic,” she said with a laugh. To her, naming a car assigns it a personality, making it feel more personable and human. For some, naming a car is just for fun; for others, it holds a deeper, more emotional value.
Losole reminisces about the sentimental attachment she has to her vehicle, recalling a special memory from her 16th birthday when Little Miss Midnight came into her life. “In the evening, I opened the door at my birthday party, and he ( her mom’s friend) was there with the keys. ‘Happy birthday.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, did I really just get a car?’” she recalls with excitement. That surprise wasn’t just about receiving a vehicle, it was a moment of connection with her family. Her Bronco quickly became part of her adventures, including a memorable road trip to Texas. “That was my first time driving it, bonding with it, seeing how it works. It was fun,” she said.
Music also plays a big role in her connection with Little Miss Midnight. “My sister is always like, ‘OK, Sophia, put some music on. I’m not listening to the radio. You can play Wicked for me,’” Losole said. After discussing car maintenance, Losole doesn’t believe that naming a car guarantees better maintenance, she acknowledges that, over time, a connection can grow. “For some, cars can be life,” she said.
Naming cars is a tradition that varies across cultures, generations, and regions, but one thing remains consistent: the names we give our vehicles reveal a little bit about who we are. For Losole, Little Miss Midnight is more than just a name. It’s a statement, a memory, and a companion on the road of life.
