On Jan. 8, Native American history was made. Lily Gladstone, a Native American woman, became the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe.
Gladstone recently starred in the Apple TV original film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. The 3-hour and 26-minute movie was also directed by influential director Martin Scorsese.
The movie, based on the book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann, focuses on Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman.

The movie, based on a true story, focuses on the Osage community in the 1920’s. The once thriving community in Oklahoma begins to be targeted for oil and money, completely changing their lives. One by one, members of the Osage community are mysteriously murdered. The mysterious and simultaneous murders of the Osage people gain attention from the FBI.
Gladstone won the award for Female Actor in a Motion Picture. After a standing ovation for her performance as Molly Burkhart, she said, “The beautiful community nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this,” in the Blackfeet language.
She also used her speech, given in front of a million viewers, to encourage Native American children, saying, “This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented.”
Gladstone is only the second Indigenous person to be nominated for a Golden Globe award. Irene Bedard was nominated in 1995 for “Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee.”
Gladstone is set to star in the movie “The Memory Police,” based on the novel by Yoko Ogawa. The movie hasn’t begun filming and there isn’t a release date yet.
